Guide to Leicester's music venues 2010Venues listings - main page - for addresses of all venues. News about venues21st July Some of the biggest changes to Leicester's live music scene are happening now or in the very near future. The Academy Music Group are to open the new O2 Academy in September. See our O2 Academy page for full details of shows, news and reviews. The new venue is situated at the Leicester University Students' Union. There will be three rooms of different sizes but they will operate on weekends rather than throughout the week. The independent city centre venue The Auditorium starts it shows in September, having opened for a preview event in July. The 1,200 capacity venue will be putting on big name acts. A smaller venue Lock42 is due to open possibly in November. The canal side venue is situated just outside of the city centre, close to the Stayfree Rehearsal rooms in Frog Island.
See our news page for details of Sub 91 opening night Brand new 450 capacity live music venue Sub91 will present all styles of alternative and underground music. Located at 30 - 32 Granby Street, the new venue will be above Walkabout bar, which already puts on live bands on Tuesday evenings. Also opening this month is the SoundHouse; previously known as The Queen Vic, the pub has had a makeover and a stage, production lighting and sound system have been installed. Leicester Rock ClubsMonkeyMonkey is a brand new club night for Leicester playing the very best in Dance anthems / Indie anthems / Funk / Ska / Punk / Hip-hop and more. 170 Belgrave Gate, Leicester. Same venue as Redeemer, and the Rack & Roll pool hall. Mosh NightClub LeicesterMosh hosts three great nights of indie and alternative music each week. The Fan Club LeicesterNow much extended, the Fan Club hosted a number of popular rock nights. Thursdays is 60s night with retro sounds of the Beatles and Motown. Friday night is 70s, 80s and 90s pop and disco sounds. Saturday is indie and dance night. Leicester's permanent live music venuesLeicester has for a long time supported a series of small capacity live music venue. Earlier this year the best known - The Charlotte - closed down and is now being converted into a block of student flats. Ex-Charlotte operator, Tim Sturgess, is now opening the biggest city centre music venue, The Auditorium. The Shed continues to be the one place that all local bands play, at some time or other, and a destination for the smaller touring bands. Birthplace of Kasabian and a plethora of local bands, the Shed has taken in its place in the history of most local bands and continues to play a key part in the local music scene. The Shed hosts some of the OBS competition nights and the Glastonbudget Festival auditions. A new venture - WOO (Window of Opportunity) - is being held there. This series of shows provides a solid foundation and starting block for the new bands that are continuously being born in Leicester. The Musician primarily plays hosts to folk, roots, americana and occasionally hosts rock gigs, usually under the auspices of external promoters.
