Formed, we are told, by musicians from Ego Armalade, they already have a prestigious list of gigs over the summer and a really great set of songs. Death of London Four member progressive band signed to a couple of record labels. As we said in our review of their set at the Pavilion earlier this year ... pumping out shovel loads of sound, their distinctive, short songs served up some delightful cocktails of punk, metal and progressive sounds. Like the bands that followed them, Death of London have devoted themselves to breaking with conventions. Heavy staccato beats, overlaid with shouts and yells, underpinned by pounding drums and lots of yearning, distorted bass riffs, it was a set in its own class. Sinister opening riffs followed by tightly pinched rhythms. Lots of stops, fragment the songs into wedges of sound. At one point the backline stopped and the band members did a spot of accappello chanting. Their songs evoke something primal, even tribal. Deceptikon Metal/rock band at the melodic end of the spectrum, with four members who formed in 2006. They have produced an EP and a video. The Dirty Backbeats Legendary band describing themselves as "a high octane 5 piece combo from Leicester blending Beefheart's mystic blues skitz, Love's RnB infused psychedelia and a healthy dose of English eccentricity." Good summary. Highly original songs and performance from leader singer Grant, the Backbeat's show brings something completely different. Having been playing for about five years or more, they have achieved a national reputation. Their songs have been played by Steve Lamaq, Rob Da Bank, Marc Riley and Huw Stephens on BBC 1 and 6. Influences from Kings of Leon and The Cramps can be seen in their work. Grant's vocal performance is blissfully manic and riotously theatrical but it perfectly depicts the music. Here is one group of musicians that are definitely not content to tread the well-worn paths of conventional rock music. However odd and fragmented their sets appears to be when you see it for the first time, its easy to let go and get drawn into an exciting and unusual musical experience. The young quintet has a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm and lead vocalist Ash gives a thrilling amount of stage presence every time he takes to the stage. The band is always accompanied by a crowd of fanatical fans who totally adore their band and always go mad at every show. Formal Warning have composed some top class songs of their own but they also play some huge pop classics such as 'The Boys of Summer' and 'Summer of 69', which they pull off remarkably well. Ash is backed up on the stage by Kyle and Leon who dance and jump around, whilst Zoe pounds away on the drums, supported by Alun on the guitar. The band's influences are easy to see in their style of playing: Angles and Airwaves, Blink 182, the earlier Greenday, My Chemical Romance and Kids in Glass Houses. Although still new and lacking some of the 'gig miles' of other young local bands, Formal Warning has got off to a cracking good start and the more people that discover this gem of a band, the more their fan base will grow.
